Robin Soderling and Philipp Kohlschreiber will be featured in Wednesday's two singles matches in Dusseldorf. They are set for meetings with Maximo Gonzalez and Daniel Gimeno-Traver, respectively.
Robin Soderling will look to keep Sweden within striking distance of Argentina when he goes up against Maximo Gonzalez at the World Team Cup on Wednesday. The Argentines have a 1-0 lead in the tie thanks to Juan Ignacio Chela's 6-1, 6-1 blowout of Christian Lindell one day earlier.
This is the first career meeting between Soderling and Gonzalez. A heavy favorite in this one, the fifth-ranked Swede is coming off a quarterfinal performance in Rome and he outlasted Sam Querrey of the USA 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(3) on Monday. Gonzalez, ranked 80th in the world, did not play singles against Kazakhstan but he teamed up with Juan Monaco to win the doubles rubber on Sunday.
The second singles rubber between Spain and the host Germans will also be contested on Wednesday. Germany leads the tie 1-0 after getting a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win from Florian Mayer over Marcel Granollers.
Philipp Kohlschreiber will look to clinch it for Germany when he takes on Daniel Gimeno-Traver. Both players endured tough matches on Sunday; Kohlschreiber fought off Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic 6-4, 7-6(5) and Gimeno-Traver fell to Igor Andreev of Russia 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(6). The Spaniard held three straight match points in the final-set tiebreaker only to see Andreev win the last five points.
Meanwhile, doubles will decide the USA-Kazakhstan tie. The Americans are expected to send Mardy Fish and John Isner to the court while the Kazakhs will likely counter with Andrey Golubev and Mikhail Kukushkin.
