Wildcard Ernests Gulbis made a successful start in Nice, having upended eighth seed Fabio Fognini in three sets. The Latvian is joined in the second round by veteran Julien Benneteau, who upset 6th seed Marcos Baghdatis.

Wildcard Ernests Gulbis is through to the second round, after rallying to defeat Fabio Fognini Tuesday afternoon. The 22-year-old saved nine of 11 break-point chances, en route to a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory in an hour and 58 minutes. Gulbis tallied five aces and four service breaks during the opening-round match.
He is due to face Denis Istomin in the next round. Istomin defeated Olivier Rochus in the first round, 6-2, 7-6(5).

World No. 83 Julien Benneteau reached the second round, following his straight-set win against 6th seed Marcos Baghdatis. After taking the opening-set tie-break, the 29-year-old Frenchman earned a key service break at 3-2 in the second. Benneteau completed his effort with nine of 10 service games held through 95 minutes.
He will take on Pablo Andujar for a place in the quarterfinal. The Spaniard passed into the round of 16 after opponent Grigor Dimitrov retired with illness.
