The United States and Kazakhstan are tied 1-1 in their round-robin matchup after Tuesday's singles action. Serbia leads Russia 2-0 thanks to wins by Dusan Lajovic and Viktor Troicki.
Mardy Fish kept up his fine 2011 form and maintained his perfect record at the World Team Cup with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Andrey Golubev on Tuesday afternoon. Fish, who won the decisive doubles point against Sweden one day earlier, prevailed after one hour and 14 minutes to give the United States a 1-0 lead over Kazakhstan.
Team USA had a good chance of taking an insurmountable 2-0 advantage when Sam Querrey led Mikhail Kukushkin by a set and a break in the second singles rubber. The 6'6'' American let a similar lead slip against Robin Soderling on Monday, and Querrey did it again in this one.
Kukushkin saved a match point at 3-5 in the second set then broke to stay alive and even things at 5-5. Thus began a streak of four straight games for the Kazakh, who broke again at 6-5 to force a third. Kukushkin gave back a break in the final set at 4-2, but he recovered when it mattered most for a clinching break at 6-5. A reeling Querrey saved two match points down 15-40, but an errant backhand eventually sealed his fate.
Surprising results were the name of the game during singles action between Serbia and Russia. For the Serbs, unheralded Dusan Lajovic filled in for Janko Tipsarevic and Lajovic stunned Igor Andreev 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-4. Viktor Troicki followed suit with a 6-3, 6-1 thrashing of Mikhail Youzhny to put Serbia ahead 2-0.
In other action, Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela crushed Christian Lindell of Sweden 6-1, 6-1. Florian Mayer treated the German crowd in Dusseldorf to a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Spain's Marcel Granollers.
