  • Argentina, Russia start strong at World Team Cup

Argentina, Russia start strong at World Team Cup Argentina and Russia begin with a bang on Sunday in Dusseldorf. A sweep of Kazakhstan put the Argentines atop their group while Igor Andreev led the way for Russia.

Argentina earned a three-match sweep of Kazakhstan on Day 1 at the World Team Cup in Dusseldorf, Germany. Juan Monaco prevailed in both singles and doubles to pace the Argentines to a routine victory.

Monaco opened the proceedings with a 6-4, 6-0 rout of Andrey Golubev. Juan Ignacio Chela followed suit by losing even fewer games in his singles effort, as he thoroughly trounced Mikhail Kukushkin 6-1, 6-2. Monaco then teamed up with Maximo Gonzalez to erase Golubev and Kukushkin 6-4, 6-3 in the doubles rubber.

While Argentina now sits atop the Red Group, Russia got off to a strong start in the Blue Group by winning two singles tilts against Spain. Mikhail Youzhny kicked things off for the Russians and raced to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Marcel Granollers.

That set the stage for a far more dramatic encounter between Igor Andreev and Daniel Gimeno-Traver. Andreev prevailed 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(6), but not before his opponent held three consecutive match points. Gimeno-Traver led 6-3 in the final-set tiebreaker only to see Andreev storm back and take the last five points of the match.

In other Blue Group action, Germany's own Philipp Kohlschreiber defeated Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia 6-4, 7-6(5).
