The World Team Cup in Dusseldorf, Germany will once again highlight the week leading up to the French Open. Serbia, Spain, and the United States are among the countries competing for the title.
Eight nations will be battling for team glory at the World Team Cup in Dusseldorf, Germany this week. On most of the players' minds, however, is preparing for the 2011 French Open.
Unlike at the ATP event in Nice where you are gone after one loss, WTC participants will be assured of seeing plenty of court time. Every country plays at least three matches (against the three opponents in its respective group) during round-robin action prior to final.
In one group, the host Germans will go up against Serbia, Spain, and Russia. Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will obviously be taking a much-needed rest, but Janko Tipsarevic, Viktor Troicki, Florian Mayer, and Mikhail Youzhny--among many others--are on hand in Dusseldorf.
The other pod of four features Argentina, Kazakhstan, the United States, and Sweden. Robin Soderling leads the way as the only Top 10 player in the field and he is joined on a Swedish squad by doubles specialists Simon Aspelin and Robert Lindstedt. The USA will look to avenge its 2010 final loss to Argentina behind a deep roster that includes James Blake, Mardy Fish, John Isner, and Sam Querrey.
Argentina has prevailed in two of last four installments of this event, with Sweden and Serbia having triumphed in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Germany last treated the home crowd to a title in 2005.
