Ferrer leads field in Nice The clay-court season continues as the ATP World Tour heads to Nice, France for the Open de Nice Côte d’Azur this week. World No. 7 David Ferrer is set to lead a 28-player field for the last event prior to the French Open.

World No. 7 makes his return to competition after missing the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Rome with a viral fever. The 29-year-old Spaniard enters into his first Nice tournament with a 27-7 record, bolstered by successful clay-court performances in Acapulco (champion), Monte-Carlo and Barcelona.

Ferrer is located in the same half of the draw as (4) Andy Roddick, (5) Alexandr Dolgopolov and (7) Sergiy Stakhovsky. Other combatants in the section include: Pablo Cuevas, Teymuraz Gabashvili, Victor Hanescu, Yen-Hsun Lu, Edouard Roger-Vasselin, Andreas Seppi and Filippo Volandri.

After an opening-round bye, Ferrer is scheduled to open his run against either Roger-Vasselin or Seppi. The nearest seed to the World No. 7 is Dolgopolov, who looms as a possible round of 16 opponent. Passage through the early rounds may set a likely meeting with either Stakhovsky or Roddick in the quarterfinal.

Tomas Berdych tops the bottom half of the draw as the second seed. The Czech, who advanced to the Masters 1000 Rome quarterfinal, will make his Nice debut this week.

Following a first-round bye, the 25-year-old is slated for a second-round clash with either Somdev Devvarman or Adrian Mannarino. He has been placed in the same section as (3) Nicolas Almagro, (6) Marcos Baghdatis and (8) Fabio Fognini.

Additional competitors in the section are: wildcards Ernests Gulbis and Julian Benneteau, Pablo Andujar, Carlos Berlocq, Grigor Dimitrov, Denis Istomin and Olivier Rochus.
