World No. 16 Richard Gasquet is through to the last four in Rome, having rallied to oust World No. 7 Tomas Berdych in three sets. The Frenchman will take on defending champion Rafael Nadal in the semifinal.
Sixteenth seed Richard Gasquet advanced to the semifinal by virtue of his three-set victory over seventh seed Tomas Berdych Friday evening. The Frenchman rallied to a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 quarterfinal win in two hours and 18 minutes.
After splitting the first two sets, Gasquet led by a service break at 3-2 in the deciding set. Berdych fought back to 3-3, but was broken to 3-4 on a costly forehand miss. Gasquet reached triple match point at 5-3, then closed on a trademark backhand winner.
Gasquet completed the match with 29 winners and four of 7 break points converted.
He will face World No. 1 Rafael Nadal for a chance to contest the championship title. The defending champion defeated Marin Cilic early Friday, 6-1, 6-3.
