World No. 4 Andy Murray advanced to the Rome quarterfinal, following his straight-set victory over hometown hope Potito Starace. The Scot came through Thursday evening, 6-2, 6-3.
Fourth seed Andy Murray kept his run in Rome alive, having upended veteran Potito Starace on Thursday, 6-2, 6-3. The 23-year-old secured four of 9 break points through just 67 minutes of competition.
After winning the opening set, Murray took a 3-1 advantage in the second set. Starace fought back to 2-3, breaking the Scot in the next game. The World No. 4 regrouped to hold triple break point at 4-3. Two match points came quickly for Murray, who closed with a strong forehand strike.
Murray completed the match with 3 aces and 26 of 32 first-service points captured.
He is slated to battle Florian Mayer in the quarterfinal. The German defeated veteran Juan Ignacio Chela in the round of 16, 7-5, 6-4.
