Richard Gasquet is through to the Rome quarterfinal, after rallying to upset World No. 3 Roger Federer Thursday evening. The Frenchman recorded his first victory over the Swiss in more than six years.
Sixteenth seed Richard Gasquet made the last eight in Rome, having dug out of a set deficit to beat two-time finalist Roger Federer. The 24-year-old, who trailed the veteran 1-8 in the series, came through 4-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(4) in two hours and 20 minutes.
After splitting the first two sets, Gasquet took a 2-0 edge in the deciding set tie-break. Federer came back to 1-2, as the Frenchman hit a backhand wide. Gasquet lost a 3-1 lead, but pushed to 5-3 with aggressive baseline play. A critical forehand error from Federer brought the 16th seed to 6-4. A final backhand miss from the Swiss closed the breaker at 7-4.
Gasquet completed the effort with 40 winners and 6 aces.
He will take on 7th seed Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinal. The Czech survived his round of 16 clash with lucky loser Jarkko Nieminen, 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-2.
