    Berdych, Mayer make Rome quarterfinal World No. 7 Tomas Berdych fought his way into the quarterfinal, having held on to defeat lucky loser Jarkko Nieminen in three sets. The Czech is joined in the final eight by Florian Mayer, who took out veteran Juan Ignacio Chela.

    Seventh seed Tomas Berdych is through the final eight, following his three-set victory over Jarkko Nieminen Thursday afternoon. The 25-year-old Czech served a poor 30% in the decider, but earned two key service breaks to seal the match. He completed the two-hour, 42-minute effort with 6 aces and five of 14 break points converted.

    Berdych will take on 16th seed Richard Gasquet for a place in the semifinal. The Frenchman rallied to upset two-time finalist Roger Federer in the round of 16, 4-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(4).

    Florian Mayer def. Juan Ignacio Chela 7-5, 6-4

    World No. 28 Florian Mayer advanced to the quarterfinal by virtue of his straight-set success against Juan Ignacio Chela. The 27-year-old German saved nine of 11 break points, en route to a 7-5, 6-4 victory in an hour and 51 minutes. Mayer finished the afternoon with 50 winners and four of 11 break points converted.

    He is slated to square off against World No. 4 Andy Murray in the quarterfinal. The Scot defeated veteran Potito Starace in the third round, 6-2, 6-3.
