Illness and a hernia will keep Argentine David Nalbandian out of the top clay event on the ATP Calendar for the third consecutive year.
With Juan Martin Del Potro looking dicey for Roland Garros - the former US open champion says he is racing against time at home in Buenos Aires to regain fitness from a hip muscle tear - Davis Cup teammate David Nalbandian has pulled the plug definitively on his participation in Paris.
The 29-year-old, who has not played in nearly three months, cites an illness which has slowed his recovery from a hernia operation. The No. 24 was said to be "not right physically" after losing 6 kilograms and being unable to train for the French Open.
Nalbandian has not played on the Paris clay since losing in the second round in 2008 at an event where he twice reached semi-finals. The Wimbledon finalist of a decade ago last played a match in Davis Cup in early March.
Nalbandian's camps says their man hopes to be fit for the Queen's club even in London from June 6, meaning that the South American will have played just four European clay-court ATP tournaments over the past three seasons.
