World No. 3 Roger Federer made a strong start in Rome, having ousted Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets. The two-time finalist came through the second-round match Wednesday evening, 6-4, 6-2.
Third seed Roger Federer passed into third round with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of former World No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Wednesday. The 29-year-old Swiss saved seven of 7 break points, en route to a second-round victory in 83 minutes.
Federer broke at 1-1 in the first set, as Tsonga donated a forehand error. A routine set brought the World No. 3 to set point at 5-4. After saving a break point, Federer closed as the Frenchman missed a service return.
Federer continued his effort to lead 4-0 in the second set. The Swiss missed his first match point at 5-2, but regrouped to complete the evening with a trademark forehand strike.
The World No. 3 ended the match with 22 winners and three of 7 break points converted.
He is slated to face 16th seed Richard Gasquet for a spot in the quarterfinal. The Frenchman defeated qualifier Igor Andreev in the second round, 6-1, 6-2.
