    Melzer retires, Troicki falls to Starace Florian Mayer is through to the round of 16 in Rome, following the retirement of opponent Jurgen Melzer. Hometown hope Potito Starace also advanced, having upset 15th seed Viktor Troicki in straight sets.

    World No. 28 Florian Mayer passed into the third round, following the retirement of 8th seed Jurgen Melzer. The German had captured the opening set, when the Austrian called it a day with a back strain.

    Mayer will take on veteran Juan Ignacio Chela for a place in the quarterfinal. The Argentine defeated Gilles Simon in the second round, 6-4, 6-2.

    Potito Starace def. (15) Viktor Troicki 6-4, 6-4

    Veteran Potito Starace advanced to the round of 16 with a straight-set upset of 15th seed Viktor Troicki. The 29-year-old Italian saved eight of 10 break points, en route to a 6-4, 6-4 victory in an hour and 46 minutes. Troicki struggled with his second serve, unable to win more than 39% of the points.

    Starace is slated to meet 4th seed Andy Murray in the round of 16. The Scot overcame Xavier Malisse in the second round, 6-2, 2-6 6-3.
