Battling Lleyton Hewitt is plotting yet another return to tennis after injury, with the former No.1 Australian reportedly aiming at a start at the French Open.
The 30-year-old has done it tough, with two hip operations over recent seasons and his most recent setback, a foot operation.
But Hewitt's coach and longtime mentor Tony Roche is optimistic about his pupil's chance of more late-career success. "He'd be the toughest competitor that I've seen," 'Rochey' told Sydney media. "He's had a lot of setbacks the last couple of years but he keeps bouncing back. He keeps wanting to improve and he's so keen, which is great for Australian tennis because we need him to hang in there."
No. 66 Hewitt's best showing at Roland Garros came a decade ago when he reached the quarter-finals. he will head to Paris untested, hoping somehow to play his way into some first of clay shape before returning to his real love, the grass.
Hewitt has played just seven matches this season as injuries their toll.
