Novak Djokovic improves to 33-0 this season with a blowout of Lukasz Kubot on Wednesday in Rome. Djokovic will try to continue the streak against Stanislas Wawrinka.
Three days after winning the Madrid title, Novak Djokovic showed no signs of slowing down in Rome.
Djokovic kicked off his campaign at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia by routing Lukasz Kubot 6-0, 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon. The world No. 2 needed just one hour and seven minutes to set up a third-round clash against Stanislas Wawrinka.
Having not lost a single match in 2011, Djokovic for a while looked like he would not even lose any games in this one. Kubot had been relatively competitive with Djokovic in two previous meetings, but he failed to win a single game in the first set. In fact, the 141st-ranked Pole went to deuce only once and won more than one point in a game only twice. He won a total of nine points to Djokovic's 25.
When Djokovic broke for a 2-0 lead in the second, it was all but over. The second-seeded Serb let up slightly at that point, and his opponent finally got on the scoreboard with a hold for 1-3. Kubot actually took care of his final three service games, but it had no kind of effect on the outcome of the match. Djokovic wrapped up the proceedings with one more routine hold at 5-4, converting his first match point at 40-15 when Kubot sent a forehand well out.
Djokovic did not record an ace or a double-fault. He served at 70 percent and won 77 percent of both his first and second-serve points. Kubot finished with one ace and three double-faults while winning a mere four of 17 points when he had to toss in a second delivery.
Next up for Djokovic is Stanislas Wawrinka, who survived Filippo Volandri 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 during second-round action.
