Stanislas Wawrinka comes back from a set deficit to beat Fabio Fognini on Tuesday in Rome. Next up for Wawrinka is Filippo Volandri.
Stanislas Wawrinka beat Fabio Fognini 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4 in the first round of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia on Monday afternoon. Wawrinka fired eight aces without double-faulting to set up a meeting with Filippo Volandri.
A tight first set saw a total of two breaks exchanged en route to a tiebreaker. Although Wawrinka was generally more competitive in his return games than Fogini, that did not prove to be the case in a tense decider. A hard-fought contest eventually led to a 6-5 advantage for Fognini, at which point the Italian seized a crucial mini-break to take the set.
The success was short-lived, however, as Wawrinka quickly took control in set two. Fognini began to spray errors from all over the court and Wawrinka had to do little more than keep the ball in the court. Already down a break at 1-3, the world No. 48 tossed in a double-fault on break point to fall into a significant hole. Wawrinka took care of his next two service games to force a third set.
With momentum in hand, Wawrinka capitalized for a quick break in the final frame of play. The 14th-ranked Swiss never came close to giving away the lead because he dropped a mere three points in his last five service games. Wawrinka finished off the proceedings with a love service hold at 5-4, clinching victory on his first match point with a perfect serve-and-volley play.
Madrid's No. 14 seed, who is now 4-0 lifetime against Fognini at the ATP level (all in three sets), wrapped up his effort with 36 winners and 43 unforced errors. An error-prone Fognini recorded 20 winners against 45 mistakes.
