Novak Djokovic and his undefeated streak will be back in action this week at the Rome Masters. Djokovic should not have too much trouble in a section of the draw that also includes Robin Soderling, Nicolas Almagro, and Stanislas Wawrinka.
If the King of Clay can't stop Novak Djokovic, who can?
That's the question heading into this week's Internazionali BNL d'Italia, the third and final clay-court Masters event of the season. Djokovic enters the tournament with his incredible hot streak still intact, having defeated Rafael Nadal 7-5, 6-4 in the final of the Mutua Madrid Open.
The second-ranked Serb is now a hard-to-believe 32-0 for his 2011 campaign. He is six for six in the titles department, winning the Australian Open, Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami, Belgrade, and Madrid. Dating back to his country's Davis Cup triumph last fall, Djokovic has won 34 consecutive matches.
With a relatively favorable draw in Rome, Djokovic's streak probably is not coming to an end anytime soon. Nadal, of course, is on the other side of the draw and Roger Federer is in Nadal's half just as he was in Madrid. Djokovic also avoided an in-form David Ferrer, who is in the same quarter as his top-ranked fellow Spaniard.
Madrid's No. 2 seed will open on Wednesday against Lukasz Kubot, a three-set winner over Pablo Cuevas in round one. Assuming Djokovic rolls over the Pole, he will get either Filippo Volandri, Fabio Fognini, or No. 14 seed Stanislas Wawrinka. Given that Wawrinka has been in dismal form of late, Djokovic cannot be disappointed in his draw.
Things could get tough in the quarterfinals, where a meeting with world No. 5 Robin Soderling is possible. Soderling, though, has struggled since a torrid start to the season and he faces a tough opener in Rome against Fernando Verdasco. Should both Soderling and Verdasco falter, newly-minted Top 10 player Nicolas Almagro could get as shot at Djokovic in the quarters.
