American Mardy Fish defeated Santiago Giraldo to go at least one round better than countryman Andy Roddick.
In a day marked by strong winds and swirling clay, American Mardy Fish came back from one set down against Colombian Santiago Giraldo. Points were frequently stopped for clay in the eyes and fallen hats, but in the end, Fish managed to weather the conditions better than his opponent.
Giraldo was able to snag a pair of service breaks in the opening set to take a one-set lead, but Fish shored up his serve in the second and third sets.
The win sends Fish into the second round, the first American to gain a spot there this week. Andy Roddick was already upended by Gilles Simon and Sam Querrey and John Isner haven’t played their first round matches yet.
Fish will take on the winner of Flavio Cipolla and Ivan Ljubicic.
