  • Almagro beats Bolelli, Querrey also advances

    5/10/11 5:12 PM | Ricky Dimon
Almagro beats Bolelli, Querrey also advances Nicolas Almagro takes out Simone Bolelli in straight sets on Tuesday in Rome. Almagro is joined in the second round by Sam Querrey, who advanced when Kevin Anderson retired.

    (9) Nicolas Almagro d. (WC) Simone Bolelli 6-0, 7-5

Almagro kicked off his campaign at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia by dismissing Bolelli after one hour and 15 minutes of play on Tuesday. Bolelli won a Challenger title last week, also in Rome, but for a while he looked out of his league making a step up to the ATP level. In fact, the 107th-ranked Italian did not win a single game in the first set. He won only nine total points, including just three of 14 even when he put in his first serve and just two against his opponent's serve.

Bolelli managed to raised his level in set two, but it was still not enough to overcome Almagro. The 10th-ranked Spaniard donated his own serve once en route to a 5-5 deadlock, but a late break secured the victory for Rome's No. 9 seed. Almagro wrapped up his effort with four aces and no double-faults while converting five of seven break chances. He will go up against Sam Querrey for a spot in the third round.

Sam Querrey d. Kevin Anderson 7-6(1), 1-0, retired

Querrey led by a set and held serve to open the second before advancing to round two when Anderson retired after one hour and 21 minutes of play. The 6'8'' South African suffered an ankle injury in the first game of the second and called it quits after Querrey won every point to hold at love. Querrey double-faulted a whopping six times but also struck six aces en route to a clash against Almagro.

Tuesday's contest had all the makings of a good one prior to its premature end. Both players held serve the entire way, but not without a struggle. Anderson fought off three break points and Querrey saved an incredible seven of seven on the way to a tiebreaker. The 25th-ranked American dominated the decider seven points to one, so he had the upper hand when the match came to an abrupt halt.
