Former World No. 6 Gilles Simon is through to the second round in Rome, following his straight-set ousting of 12th seed Andy Roddick. The American remains without a victory since March at the BNP Paribas Open.
Gilles Simon advanced to round two at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Rome, having upended World No. 12 Andy Roddick on Monday. The 26-year-old Frenchman tallied four aces and four of eight break-point chances en route to a 6-3, 6-3 victory in 82 minutes.
"He moves very well, which you don't want to see when you are short of matches like I was today, when you are not getting clean hits," Roddick explained. "We soon got into rallies and it became a battle striking the ball in movement, I was coming second sometimes."
Simon will take on either John Isner or Juan Ignacio Chela for a spot in the round of 16.
Elsewhere, both 10th seed Gael Monfils and qualifier Kei Nishikori withdrew from competition, citing illness and kidney stones, respectively. The two were replaced by lucky losers Jarkko Nieminen and Adrian Mannarino late Monday.
