Veteran Xavier Malisse made the second round in Rome, following his straight-set win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. The Belgian is joined in round two by Sergiy Stakhovsky, who defeated Victor Hanescu.

World No. 41 Xavier Malisse is through to the second round, after taking out World No. 29 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in straight sets. The 30-year-old Belgian converted four of 10 break point chances, en route to a 7-5, 6-2 victory in an hour and 37 minutes. Garcia-Lopez struggled with his second serve, unable to win more than 32% of the points.
Malisse is slated to take on World No. 4 Andy Murray in the second round.
Sergiy Stakhovsky def. (Q) Victor Hanescu 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(6)
World No. 36 Sergiy Stakhovsky survived an extended battle with qualifier Victor Hanescu on Monday. The 25-year-old Ukranian held on to capture the deciding-set tie-break after saving three match points, having sealed the contest in two hours and seven minutes. Stakhovsky completed his effort with six aces and two of three break points won.
He will square off against lucky loser Jarkko Nieminen for a place in the round of 16. Nieminen defeated fellow lucky loser Adrian Mannarino in the opening round, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.

Stakhovsky trailed 6-3 in the tiebreaker, just like he did against Harrison at the US Open
Hanescu had two serves at 6-3. Lost both in rallies that ended with errors. Stakhovsky saved the next one on serve with a backhand volley winner then hit a service winner out wide at 6-6 to give himself a match point. Converted it with a perfect forehand drop-shot.
