Sweden’s Robin Soderling put in a tough day on court against hard-hitting Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Robin Soderling will meet Roger Federer in Friday’s quarterfinal, a re-match of their quarterfinal showdown at Roland Garros last year, where Soderling sent the Swiss packing, but in order to get to Federer, the Swede had to get past Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Tsonga kept pace with Soderling throughout the match, so that every point counted. In the end the points total was 84 for Tsonga, 89 for Soderling.
The Swede maintained tight control on his own serve. Tsonga managed to earn 3 break point chances, but he wasn’t successful at converting any of them. Soderling had 6 chances to break, but only snagged one break right at the very end of the match.
The match was a testament to the altitude in Madrid and the speedy court conditions which play far more like a hard court than what players will find at Roland Garros. Soderling will find more of the same against Federer on Friday.
