Roger Federer avenged his 2010 French Open quarterfinal loss to Robin Soderling with a straight-set victory over the Swede on Friday.
Roger Federer played the match of the tournament on Friday against world No. 5 Robin Soderling. The match was hard-hitting with relatively short points, belying the red clay that usually requires a grinding baseline game.
The first set came and went without a service break. Federer had control of more points, but he wasn't able to make a real dent on the Soderling serve. The better player won out in the tiebreak, however. Soderling only put 2 points on the scoreboard in the breaker to give Federer the lead.
A single break of serve decided the match in the second set. Federer continued to play well, while Soderling seemed to lose just the slightest bit of steam. By the end of the match, the Swiss had won 10 points more than his opponent.
Federer moves into the Madrid semifinals for a third straight year where he will face Rafael Nadal.

Emiliano, if you don't consider rafa and federer a great rivalry then it is you who is missing out on tennis. Keep quoting the head to head. It's all you've got to come up with and its boring now. We could go on and say how rafa was world no. 2 BECAUSE of federer for over 3 years, but it's boring. Rafa is world no. 1, the best on clay. Roger has nothing to lose today, all he needs to do is to attack more because you can bet rafa is just going to hit to the back hand and continuing with his slashing bashing game. I hope federer teaches him a masterclass today, but likely not. Am still looking forward to the match though as I respect both players and what they brought to fans like me. You'll never understand that feeling because you take cheap shots at federer all the time putting the little lol which you don't mean as if that's going to create a laugh. laugh's on you.
Cheryl, federer already 'avenged' his loss to soderling at the FO, in 2010 at the WTF where he beat him 76 63.
