Tomas Berdych takes care of Juan Monaco in straight sets on Thursday in Madrid. Berdych is joined in the quarterfinals by David Ferrer, who defeated Sergiy Stakhovsky.
(7) Tomas Berdych d. Juan Monaco 7-5, 6-3
For a second straight day, Berdych survived a tough first set and then went into cruise control at the Mutua Madrid Open. Following a 6-4, 6-0 dismissal of Marcel Granollers in round two, Berdych ousted Monaco after one hour and 48 minutes of play on Thursday. The seventh-ranked Czech gave back an early break at 3-1 in the first set and it stayed on serve en route to a 6-5 Berdych lead. That's when Monaco cracked again, as his opponent broke to take the set in style.
With momentum in hand, Berdych raced to a 3-0 advantage in the second. Never one to go down without a fight, Monaco took care of his next two service games and had multiple chances at 2-4. However, the 43rd-ranked Argentine missed all three of his break chances and saw Berdych hold for 5-2. Monaco then stormed back from 40-0, triple match point down at 5-3, but Berdych held him off and won the final two points for victory. Next up for the 2010 Wimbledon finalist is quarterfinal clash against Thomaz Bellucci.
(6) David Ferrer d. Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-3, 7-6(3)
Ferrer improved to 27-7 for the season by ousting Stakhovsky in one hour and 29 minutes during third-round action on Thursday night. The sixth-ranked Spaniard opened in near flawless fashion, winning all 20 points in his five first-set service games. As a result, one break was easily enough for Ferrer to serve out the set with ease at 5-3.
Stakhovsky attempted to turn the tide in set two and he took a surprising break lead. The 38th-ranked Ukrainian, however, gave back the advantage and was eventually forced into a tiebreaker. Stakhovsky had won each of his previous two matches in third-set 'breakers, but this time he could not not deliver the goods at the crucial moments. Ferrer rolled through it seven points to three and advanced to the quarterfinals. Madrid's No. 6 seed, who record two aces and two double-faults, is set for a blockbuster showdown with Novak Djokovic.
