• Nadal through to quarterfinal after Del Potro walkover

    5/5/11 8:19 PM | Kelli DeMario
Nadal through to quarterfinal after Del Potro walkover World No. 1 Rafael Nadal is through to the final eight at the Mutua Madrid Open, following the withdrawal of opponent Juan Martin Del Potro. The Argentine was unable to compete, citing a left hip injury on Thursday.

Top seed Rafael Nadal moved into the Madrid quarterfinal without playing a point, after round of 16 opponent Juan Martin Del Potro withdrew on Thursday. The 22-year-old sustained a left hip strain during his opening-round clash against 13th seed Mikhail Youzhny.

The World No. 1 will take on either Michael Llodra or fellow Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver for a place in the semifinal.

Llodra lost the first set 6-1 and then managed to win the match in the tie-break (4)..
He won't be so so fresh for this match.
Nadal on the other hand will be eager to get out there.
These two have very different styles, let's see how the match develops but it would be unlikely if Llodra gets a set here.

Shireling , 5/6/11 12:52 PM

Yeah, interesting to see how Llodra's serve and volley style affects Rafa

Monalysa , 5/6/11 2:25 PM

I love watching Rafa's passing shots.

chlorostoma , 5/6/11 3:29 PM

Someone, anyone, please let me know what type of mood Rafa is in today!

Monalysa , 5/6/11 4:19 PM

Llodra has been broken twice now for 3-0. LLodra so far has been trying everything: serve-voley, mixing things up, drop shots.... but Nadal is so on there is not much he can do at the moment. Rafa is looking very focussed.

chlorostoma , 5/6/11 4:24 PM

4-0. Nadal has now held his first two service games to love.

Llodra is fighting hard, which is why it has taken 5 break chances for the 2 breaks.

chlorostoma , 5/6/11 4:26 PM

Thnks much! Great, good to hear! I was actaully worried about the S&V, but good to know that Rafa is dealing with it well. Hope he remains foucsed bcos Llodra can be dangerous!

Monalysa , 5/6/11 4:27 PM

absolute massacre....

vrael , 5/6/11 4:29 PM

one of LLodra's first succesful serve and volleys earned him his first game. 4-1.

chlorostoma , 5/6/11 4:32 PM

First return game that LLodra earned points, three in fact. 5-1

chlorostoma , 5/6/11 4:38 PM

llodra had two decent service games and he made the scoreline respectable...:)

light practice for rafa..

vrael , 5/6/11 4:46 PM

Let's hope Rafa wins in two! Still dont trust Llodra, but he could be tired.

Monalysa , 5/6/11 4:48 PM

llodra is playing much better now....that last volley was rafterlike

vrael , 5/6/11 4:51 PM

Earlier the commentator said that most years Nadal starts with a lot more unforced errors in his first couple of matches in Madrid. But that it has not been the case this week... very clean playing all along.

And that his concentration has been very good so far in both matches.

chlorostoma , 5/6/11 4:55 PM

Nadal is making Llodra's life difficult... against many other players Lloda's game would indeed be very dangerous.

chlorostoma , 5/6/11 5:01 PM

rafa took a tumble....his foot got stuck...damn you tiriac and your sand court...:(

but he looks OK

vrael , 5/6/11 5:04 PM

These pro tennis players have practiced those rolls plenty... but still, every time you take a tumble there is a little risk. so YEAH damn you tiriac.

chlorostoma , 5/6/11 5:08 PM

vrael , 5/6/11 5:09 PM

Llodra is playing a lot better now but Rafa is just too good, even with all the net approaches.

Better this way as Rafa is getting more practice with a more competitive tennis.

chlorostoma , 5/6/11 5:10 PM

MAGIC...again....what great movement....VAAAAAAAMOS!!

vrael , 5/6/11 5:12 PM

rafa breaks...fist pumps...and looks pumped...VAAAAAMOS!!

vrael , 5/6/11 5:13 PM

This last point was more quitessential Nadal than many similar ones I've seen. LLodra served out very wide, Nadal returns, then LLodra at the net returns while bending deep in the knees and Nadal has to run across and forward an enormous distance to catch a low-bouncing ball just before it bounces a second time in the tramlines... and makes the cross-court sharp-angled pass just past Llodra and just before the line. There is almost no-one who can ever do this at this level of difficulty.

chlorostoma , 5/6/11 5:14 PM

I can't find a link that works , sniff, sniff :(

Shireling , 5/6/11 5:14 PM

try score hunter - has been working for me all week

chlorostoma , 5/6/11 5:17 PM

FEDERER please win your match.....oh please please please...:D

vrael , 5/6/11 5:18 PM

This match just reminds me how tough it is to be consistent on this difficult surface... to win all the time against so many different players.

chlorostoma , 5/6/11 5:21 PM

Thx chlorostoma !! :)

Shireling , 5/6/11 5:21 PM

Just as expected, Rafa takes it in two - 62 62.

nadline , 5/6/11 5:25 PM

Ah well, got to see the last 6 points of the match :)
If that was indicative of the whole match - nice practice session for Rafa - Llodra's charges to the net were a bit suicidal but I guess that was his game plan from the beginning...

Shireling , 5/6/11 5:26 PM

GSM his highness KING of all clay courts...

vrael , 5/6/11 5:27 PM

Nadal doesn't always do it in 'early' rounds (it's not that early anymore I suppose) but he gave the crowd a warm smile when he walked back into the court after shaking the umpire's hand.

chlorostoma , 5/6/11 5:28 PM

Augustina08 , 5/6/11 5:29 PM

Rafa must have look absolutley royal........shame im at work....grrrrrrrrrrr!!

Monalysa , 5/6/11 5:30 PM

GREAT news Augustina08....

vrael , 5/6/11 5:30 PM

Beautiful of Rafa! Just master class! 73% of the first serve in, that is just great! This was good for Rafa to practice playing at the net and not running a lot...and I am in love with his passing shots...Llodra is unusual player and can be difficult, but Rafa is just fabulous...three down two to go! Vamos Rafa!!!

natashao , 5/6/11 5:34 PM

S&V works well on hard, but its really tough to pull on clay esp. against one like Rafa!!!

Congrats Rafa!! match at a time!!! VAMOS!!!!!!

Monalysa , 5/6/11 5:37 PM

If anyone can pull off S&V on clay it is Llodra. Against most players he would have been really dangerous today. Against Nadal this won him a number of the points he did score... and he also lost many S&V points as Nadal just too good at almost everything.

chlorostoma , 5/6/11 5:42 PM

Llodra probably really thought he had a shot with his game plan!.......cest lavie!

Monalysa , 5/6/11 5:47 PM

I suppose every pro player that goes on court must have that believe... that there is some possibility that he might win no matter whom against. In Llodra's case mixing up his game, serving very well, and S&Ving a lot was probably the gameplan that was going to give his best chances against Rafa. And credit to him he stuck to it the entire time and even made the first part of the second set competitive (on his own serve).

chlorostoma , 5/6/11 6:04 PM

The match point, smiling to the crowd, changing the shirt and signing an autograph.
