Novak Djokovic is through to the Madrid quarterfinals after blowing out Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on Thursday. Djokovic, now 29-0 this season, awaits either David Ferrer or Sergiy Stakhovsky.
Novak Djokovic remained perfect in 2011 by crushing Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-1, 6-2 in the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Thursday. Djokovic, now 29-0, advanced to the quarterfinals after a mere 51 minutes of play.
This one was never competitive, as Djokovic took complete control right from the start. The second-ranked Serb won the first six points of the match and an incredible 16 of the first 19. Breaks at 1-0 and 3-0 eventually paved the way for Djokovic to seize a commanding 5-0 lead. Garcia-Lopez finally got on the scoreboard with a love hold for 1-5, but his opponent served out the opening set one game later.
More of the same continued in the second. Djokovic opened with an immediate break, converting his second chance on a scorching forehand pass. That lone break would easily have been enough because Madrid's No. 2 seed dropped only one service point in the entire set. Instead, Djokovic added another break for good measure at 5-2 and served out the match at love, clinching victory with his fifth ace.
Another virtually flawless performance saw Djokovic strike 24 winners to only five unforced errors. Clearly out of his league against the hottest player on tour, Garcia-Lopez finished with seven winners and 17 mistakes.
With the win, Djokovic ties Ivan Lendl's number of victories to begin an ATP season. Lendl accomplished his 29-0 mark in 1986. Djokovic can move past Lendl and into third place on Friday against either David Ferrer or Sergiy Stakhovsky.

tied Lendels mark but still 10 wins behind Mcenroe, although i dont think Mcenroe had any chance of starting a season with 39 wins if he played in this era
