Tomas Berdych races past Marcel Granollers and into the Madrid third round on Wednesday. He is joined by Thomaz Bellucci, who advanced when Florian Mayer retired.
(7) Tomas Berdych d. (WC) Marcel Granollers 6-4, 6-0
Berdych recovered from a slow start to crush Granollers in one hour and 16 minutes and reach the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Wednesday. Granollers led by a break at 3-2 in the first set and had multiple game points for a 4-2 lead, but that's when it all fell apart. The 50th-ranked Spaniard eventually dropped serve for 3-3 and was broken again at 4-5 while trying to stay in the set.
From there it was all Berdych, who ran away in the second without losing a single game. The seventh-ranked Czech dropped a mere one point in three service games and lost only seven points in total throughout the entire set. Berdych finished with one ace and no double-faults while winning an incredible 62 percent of his first-serve return points. Next up for the No. 7 seed is Juan Monaco.
Thomaz Bellucci d. Florian Mayer 6-7(5), 6-3, 3-0, retired
Bellucci fired 11 aces and double-faulted just once as he took control of the match against Mayer before the German retired midway through the final set. When Mayer called it quits after one hour and 41 minutes of play, Bellucci booked his spot alongside Andy Murray in the Madrid third round. Early on, however, the Brazilian's status in the tournament was anything but assured. One break of serve for each man was exchanged en route to a first-set 'breaker, which Mayer took seven points to five.
As the match progressed, however, Bellucci gained more and more momentum. The world No. 36 donated his own serve once in set two, but he made up for it with two breaks of his own and served it out at 5-3. When Bellucci won 12 of 13 points in the third and broke twice for a commanding 3-0 lead, Mayer signaled for the end.
