Thomaz Bellucci pulls off the upset of the tournament by taking out Andy Murray on Thursday in Madrid. Bellucci advances to a quarterfinal clash against Tomas Berdych.
Andy Murray showed signs of emerging from his 2011 slump by reach the Monte-Carlo quarterfinals. Thomaz Bellucci made sure Murray did not get all the way out of it on Thursday.
Bellucci upset the Scot 6-4, 6-2 in the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open after one hour and 30 minutes of play. Without dropping serve a single time, Bellucci set up a quarterfinal showdown against Tomas Berdych.
Murray had chances to seize an early upper hand, but Bellucci saved two break points at 1-1 in the first set and another at 2-2. Although Murray stayed mentally strong amidst the squandered opportunities, he finally cracked at the worst possible moment. Serving to stay in the opening frame of play at 4-5, the world No. 4 donated two consecutive forehand errors starting at 30-30 to give his opponent the set.
Bellucci continued to hold his service with relative ease after the initial stages of the match, and his ability to keep the pressure on Murray on a consistent basis eventually proved to be decisive. The 36th-ranked Brazilian earned his second break of the evening at 2-2, battling through two deuces when Murray struck another errant forehand. Bellucci consolidated the lead for 5-2, but he did not even have to serve out the match. Another break came at 5-2 as the underdog clinched victory when Murray netted a backhand.
Both men recorded 21 unforced errors, but a more aggressive Bellucci fired 21 winners to Murray's 14. Bellucci also blasted four aces and won 81 percent of his first-serve points.

It wasn't a surprise Murray hasn't had a good week of tennis after Australian open and he has never been a force on clay.
