Novak Djokovic stays undefeated in 2011 by rolling over Kevin Anderson in straight sets on Wednesday in Madrid. Next up for Djokovic is Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
Novak Djokovic improved his perfect 2011 record to 28-0 on Wednesday, beating Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open. Djokovic turned in a solid performance and struck 22 winners to 17 unforced errors while advancing after one hour and 40 minutes of play.
Anderson, who beat Djokovic three years ago in Miami and and put up a good fight at the same event this season, once again managed to be competitive. The 6'8'' South African got off to a fine start and saved break points in two of his first three service games to stay on serve en route to 3-4. Anderson had a game point for 4-4, but Djokovic eventually broke and served out the set at love at 5-3.
The second-ranked Serb also took his time seizing control in set two. He fought off two break points at 0-1 and remained on serve on the way to a 3-3 deadlock. That's when Djokovic struck decisively, capitalizing on his second break point of the game thanks to backhand error from his opponent. Madrid's No. 2 seed served it out from there, converting his second match point at 5-4 with an error-inducing first serve.
"It's a big win for me today, because the conditions in Madrid are different from any other clay-court event," Djokovic explained. "It was a great test; first match here. Hopefully will be better the next one."
Djokovic finished with two aces and two double-faults while setting up a third-round clash against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Anderson wrapped up his effort with seven aces and he did not double-fault a single time.
