  • Del Potro playing in pain as hip hurts in Madrid

    5/4/11 3:14 PM | Johan Lindahl
Del Potro playing in pain as hip hurts in Madrid Juan Martin Del Potro is playing in some pain as his hip starts to bother him in Madrid after last week's title-winning performance on the clay of Estoril in neighboring Portugal.

The Argentine who missed more than eight months of 2010 play to rehab after wrist surgery, is determined not to let his latest problem force him form the court.

"Part of it could be that it's been a long time since I played last on clay. But I always want to win and I think of winning no matter the amount of pain. This is a type of pain that I can play through."

The timing could not be worse for the 2009 US Open champion, who has brought his ranking back to 32nd through titles this season in Delray Beach in February on hardcourt and the clay success of Estoril, where he beat Fernando Verdasco in the final.

But during his opening Madrid win over Russian Mikhail Youzhny, del Potro had to be seen by the trainer. "I'm improving very fast but I don't know if I'm playing better or worse than 2009. I just want to continue improving my game, my body and overall physically. I want to be ready to fight all of the players for the second part of the year so that what I'm trying to work on," he said.

"I'm happy because of winning, now it's just my hip is bothering me a bit from the Estoril semi-finals. I'm trying to play, I'm trying to cope with it. But the important thing is to win against any pains you have."

del potro cruising against cilic.
the wee hip injury means he has no pressure against nadal. court conditions are perfect for him at madrid. it shall be a match to watch.

Perhaps, but i think Del Potro with his style of play makes him quite prone to injury esp in places that are critical to this game/movement. I cant see his career lasting very long unless he changes his style somewhat.

I think the sliding on clay caused his hip problems. Perhaps if he cuts down on his clay tournaments and concentrate on hard courts (which needs no sliding around the courts) he may be able to avoid serious hip problems.

Is he playing well or is Cilic playing badly?

i thought this would be one helluva match, but del potro's blasting cilic really. if there's any hip issue, he's clearly worked on it before coming on court.

He may have some pain killing jabs before he comes on court. I'm a bit disappointed with Cilic not being able to make it bit more competitive. Cilic seems to be in unstoppable decline, poor boy! So we are really having a Rafa/Delpo match, should be a more competitive match than the Delpo/Cilic and the Rafa/Baggy match(es).
