Marcel Granollers upsets Nikolay Davydenko on Tuesday in Madrid. Granollers is joined in the second round by Gilles Simon, a straight-set winner over Ivan Ljubicic.
(WC) Marcel Granollers d. Nikolay Davydenko 7-5, 6-2
Davydenko was coming off a title at the BMW Open in Munich, but his stay at the Mutua Madrid Open was a short one. Granollers dismissed him in one hour and 35 minutes during first-round action on Tuesday, without facing a single break point in the process. Davydenko made it competitive early, as no breaks were to be had en route to 5-5. That's when the turning point came, though, as Granollers broke for a 6-5 lead and served out the opening set with ease.
From there it was all over for Davydenko. The 28th-ranked Russian won only six return points in set two while finding success on only one of seven second-serve points. Granollers added two more breaks before finishing off the proceedings on serve at 5-2. The 50th-ranked Spaniard struck one ace without double-faulting and set up a second-round clash against No. 7 seed Tomas Berdych.
Gilles Simon d. Ivan Ljubicic 7-5, 7-6(8)
Simon won for the second straight time in this head-to-head series and improved to 2-3 lifetime against Ljubicic by prevailing after one hour and 55 minutes of play on Tuesday in Madrid. Both sets came down to the wire, but Simon delivered the goods when it mattered most on each occasion. The match opened with 11 straight service holds and no break points in the process, but the 20th-ranked Frenchman suddenly struck at 6-5 for a set-ending break.
Set two progressed in similar fashion, but this time Ljubicic managed to stay toe-to-toe with his opponent the entire way. The 37th-ranked Croat fought off three break points to keep himself within striking distance and he eventually forced a tiebreaker. Both players had chances in a back-and-forth decider, but Simon held his nerve. A final mini-break came with Ljubicic serving at 8-9 and Simon booked his spot alongside No. 4 seed Andy Murray in the second round.
