David Ferrer wins a bizarre match against Adrian Mannarino on Tuesday in Madrid. Ferrer is through to a third-round encounter with Sergiy Stakhovsky.
Despite failing to win a single game in the second set, David Ferrer maintained his hot streak and overcame Adrian Mannarino 7-5, 0-6, 6-0 in the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Tuesday. Ferrer needed one hour and 54 minutes to set up a third-round clash against Segiy Stakhovsky.
This one was back-and-forth right from the start. Mannarino came out with an immediate break in the first game of the match only to give it back due to some errors at 3-2. Both players then held en route to 6-5 before Ferrer regained the momentum. Mannarino led 30-0 while serving to stay in the set, but Ferrer won the next four points to take it.
Just as he had done in the initial frame of play, however, Mannarino struck right away for a break and a 1-0 advantage. This time the 59th-ranked Frenchman was not about to give it back. Instead, he simply ran away with the second set and did not even lose a single game in the process. Ferrer dropped a pair of marathon service games later in the set, at 0-2 after five deuces and at 0-4 following four more deuces. Mannarino then survived another deuce game on serve at 5-0 and forced a third set when Ferrer netted a backhand.
If the Madrid faithful were silenced, they had plenty to cheer about during the final frame of play. Ferrer returned the bagel favor, losing a mere total of 10 points in the entire set. The sixth-ranked Spaniard caught fire with his forehand and broke for 2-0 but still had to battle out of a 0-40 deficit and save four break points in order to build a commanding 3-0 lead. At that point it was all over, and Ferrer won love games for 4-0 and 5-0 before his final break of the evening clinched victory.
Madrid's No. 6 seed double-faulted five times but also cracked four aces to Mannarino's zero. Ferrer, amazingly, converted all five of his break-point opportunities while Mannarino capitalized on four of 12 chances.
