Former World No. 4 Juan Martin Del Potro made a successful debut at the 2011 Mutua Madid Open, having ousted 13th seed Mikhail Youzhny in three sets. The Argentine won his first match at the event since 2009.
World No. 32 Juan Martin Del Potro continued his winning ways with a three-set victory over World No. 13 Mikhail Youzhny early Tuesday. The 22-year-old collected eight aces and three service breaks, en route to a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win in two hours and 7 minutes.
After breezing through the opening set, Del Potro was treated for a left hip strain at 1-2 in the second. Youzhny, who led 3-1 in the set, leveled the match as the Argentine netted a forehand on set point.
Del Potro regrouped to break at 2-1, with help from his trademark forehand. The 22-year-old quickly held double match-point, then closed with an ace.
"I feel good, happy because of winning. Now it’s just my hip is bothering me a bit," Del Potro said, post-victory. "It’s a pain that I've had since Estoril and maybe it could be because it has been a long time since I played on clay. I always want to win and I think of winning no matter the amount of pain and it's a type of pain that allows me to play. It’s a Masters 1000 where there are lot of people looking at me to do the best I can and that’s why I continued on the court, because I knew I could win the match."
He is slated to face Marin Cilic for a place in the round of 16. The Croatian won his opening-round match against veteran Potito Starace, 7-6(5), 6-4.
