Marin Cilic is through to the second round in Madrid after taking out Potito Starace in straight sets. The Croatian is joined by qualifier Daniel Gimeno-Traver, who rallied to upset Richard Gasquet late Monday.

World No. 61 Daniel Gimeno-Traver advanced to the second round, following his come-from-behind win over Richard Gasquet. The 25-year-old won just his third Tour-level match of the season, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Gimeno-Traver broke to 4-2 in the deciding set, as Gasquet donated a double fault. After missing five match points, the Spaniard closed the match in two hours and 15 minutes.
He will face eighth seed Jurgen Melzer for a place in the round of 16.

World No. 19 Marin Cilic made a strong start in Madrid, having ousted veteran Potito Starace in straight sets. The 22-year-old Croatian tallied 11 aces and three breaks of serve, en route to a 7-6(5), 6-4 victory in 94 minutes. By virtue of the first-round win, Cilic improved his season record to 18-9.
He is scheduled to take on either 13th seed Mikhail Youzhny or former World No. 4 Juan Martin Del Potro in the second round.
