  • Tsonga advances, Dolgopolov ousted in Madrid

    5/2/11 3:41 AM | Cheryl Murray
Tsonga advances, Dolgopolov ousted in Madrid Jo-Wilfried Tsonga pulled off one of the first upsets of the tournament when he sent No. 10 seed Nicolas Almagro packing in the first round.

    Jo-Wilfried Tsonga def. Nicolas Almagro 6-1, 6-3

With the speed of the courts and the altitude in Madrid, Nicolas Almagro’s loss to France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga isn’t an enormous upset, but the ease of Tsonga’s win was a bit surprising. Almagro came into the tournament with a 0-3 record against the Frenchman; Tsonga once again showed that his ability to hit through Almagro is the Spaniard’s undoing.

Tsonga faced just 2 break points in the brief match, both of which he fought off. He will play the winner of Kei Nishikori and Pere Riba in the second round.

Santiago Giraldo def. Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-1, 7-5

The result woes of the Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov continued on Sunday with the Australian Open quarterfinalist going down tamely to Santiago Giraldo of Colombia. The match lasted just over an hour in time, with Dolgopolov getting broken 4 times.

The Ukrainian had a great start to the year, and he enjoys a No. 21 ranking due to his success, but he has now posted three first round defeats in a row. Giraldo will take on No. 5 seed Robin Soderling in the next round.
