Roger Federer will make a return to the Rotterdam ATP event next February, with proud tournament director Richard Krajicek - the 1996 Wimbledon champion - possibly using the All England club connection to finally lure the Swiss back.
Federer will be playing at the Ahoy stadium for the first time since 2005, when he beat Croatian Ivan Ljubicic for the title. Federer usually spends February in Dubai after the Australian Open, but looks to be changing his plans for next season.
In his younger days, Federer played Rotterdam from 2001-2005, losing the 2001 final to Frenchman Nicolas Escude. "We are very proud that Roger is returning to Rotterdam," said Kraijcek of the six-time Wimbledon winner. "Not only he's one of the most important players in the history of tennis, I consider him also one of the greater sportsmen in general.
"He has always performed very well in Rotterdam and his victory in 2005 was one of the highlights in our 38 years history".
Federer added in a statement: "Rotterdam is a special event for me. In 1999 it was one of my first big tournaments outside Switzerland. I look forward to finally being able to see my own name on the Winners Ring in the stadium."
