The clay-court season continues as the ATP World Tour heads to Madrid for the Mutua Madrid Open this week. Defending champion Rafael Nadal is set to lead a talent-flush, 56-player field for the Masters 1000 event in Spain.
World No. 1 Rafael Nadal makes his return to competition after winning a record-setting seventh championship trophy in Monte-Carlo. The 24-year-old enters into the Mutua Madrid Open with a 34-match winning streak on clay, aided by a title-winning run in Barcelona.
Nadal has compiled a 29-4 record this season. He is set to make his ninth appearance at the tournament, where he won his first title in 2005. The Mallorcan captured the title in 2010 over Roger Federer, 6-4, 7-6(5).
The defending champion is located in the same half of the draw as (8) Jurgen Melzer and (13) Mikhail Youzhny. Other combatants in the section include: Estoril Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro, Marcos Baghdatis, Marin Cilic, Michael Llodra and Richard Gasquet.
After an opening-round bye, Nadal is scheduled to open his title defense against Baghdatis. The nearest seed to the World No. 1 is Youzhny, who has drawn a difficult first-round challenge in former World No. 4 Del Potro. Passage through the early rounds may set a likely meeting with Melzer in the quarterfinal.
