Gael Monfils takes down Ivo Karlovic on Monday in Madrid. Monfils is joined in the second round by Thiemo De Bakker, a three-set winner over Juan Carlos Ferrero.
(9) Gael Monfils d. Ivo Karlovic 6-3, 7-6(6)
Monfils kicked off his Mutua Madrid Open campaign on Monday with a straight-set victory over Karlovic during first-round action. The 10th-ranked Frenchman served at 82 percent and won 80 percent of his first-serve points while advancing after one hour and 21 minutes. Monfils got off to an extremely routine start, breaking Karlovic twice in set one and cruising through his own service games without facing a break point.
His second break at 5-3 allowed Monfils to open the second frame of play on serve, but Karlovic did well serving from behind. The 6'10'' Croat saved two break points and managed to stay on serve the entire way, forcing a tiebreaker. In the end, though, Monfils came up big at the crucial moments and took the 'breaker eight points to six. Madrid's No. 9 seed struck three aces and three-double faults en route to a meeting with Juan Monaco.
(Q) Thiemo De Bakker d. (WC) Juan Carlos Ferrero 2-6, 7-5, 6-4
De Bakker recovered from a slow start to silence the Spanish crowd and take out Ferrero in two hours and three minutes. Ferrero came out firing and held his first nine service games of the match. The 73rd-ranked Spaniard broke twice in the first set and finished it off in style with a break at 5-3. Starting the second frame of play on serve, Ferrero continued to play with a lead in hand but De Bakker successfully served to stay in the match at 4-5.
That's when the turning point game. Out of nowhere, De Bakker finally broke for a 6-5 advantage and served out the set to force a third. The 83rd-ranked Dutchman maintained the momentum and his second break of the day proved decisive at 3-3. De Bakker made no mistake in serving out the match the rest of the way, and he wrapped it up at love at 5-4. The qualifier played a clean match and struck 40 winners to 30 errors while setting up a clash against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
