Guillermo Garcia-Lopez upsets Stanislas Wawrinka on Sunday in Madrid. Juan Monaco is also through to the second round.
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez d. (14) Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 5-7, 6-4
Wawrinka lost in the first round of his third straight tournament on Sunday, getting bounced by Garcia-Lopez at the Mutua Madrid Open. Garcia-Lopez won 61 percent of his second-serve return points and advanced after two hours and 45 minutes. The 26th-ranked Spaniard seized an early break in the first set and saved both of the break points he faced before serving it out at 5-4.
Wawrinka fought back in the second, during which one break of serve each was exchanged en route to 5-5. The 14th-ranked Swiss broke at 6-5 to force a third but could not sustain the momentum. Garcia-Lopez again needed only one break in order to close out the proceedings on serve at 5-4. He now awaits either Juan Carlos Ferrero or Thiemo De Bakker.
Juan Monaco d. Andrey Golubev 2-6, 6-2, 6-2
Monaco recovered from a dismal start to blow past a slumping Golubev in one hour and 37 minutes on Sunday. The 38th-ranked Argentine held only two of four service games in the opening set, but Golubev quickly collapsed.
A dominant second set saw Monaco donate his own serve once only to break his opponent three times out of four. Golubev completely disappeared at that point. The 45th-ranked Kazakh won a mere four points in four return games during the final frame of play as Monaco set up a second-round meeting with either Gael Monfils or Ivo Karlovic.
