  • Cipolla ousts Roddick in Madrid

    5/2/11 10:29 PM | Kelli DeMario
Cipolla ousts Roddick in Madrid World No. 160 Flavio Cipolla won his first ATP World Tour match of the season, following his three-set upset of 12th seed Andy Roddick. The Italian came through 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-3 late Monday.

Unseeded Flavio Cipolla is through to the second round at the Mutua Madrid Open, having ousted World No. 12 Andy Roddick in three sets. The 27-year-old Italian missed multiple match points in the second set, but held on to win in three hours and 3 minutes. By virtue of his opening-round success, Cipolla secured his maiden Tour-level victory in 2011.

After splitting the first two sets, Cipolla built a 4-1 lead in the decider. Roddick looked to turn the tide, as he broke to 3-4. A loose game from the American gave the Italian an immediate service break advantage. A final match point came at 5-3 for Cipolla, who completed his effort with a forehand strike.

Cipolla ended the match with three aces and eight of 10 break points saved.

He is slated to face veteran Michael Llodra in the second round. The Frenchman defeated Sam Querrey early Monday, 6-2, 6-3.

Cipolla played an excellent match and thoroughly deserved his win
Roddick did not display good attitude and it was bad sportsman not owning up to a ball bounce twice on a shot and his racket abuse and laungage was disgraceful The umpire should of stamped it out and Roddick should be fined ( not that would change his temper )Players like him get away with too much on court !!!

what a great season Roddick is having..........(not)

Good grief. Roddick is just useless on clay. Good on Cipolla though.

deuce, i totally didnt. i didnt pick roddick to go very far certainly, but didnt expect him to lose his very first match at Madrid, explains why i'm losing so terribly atm :/

US players must play on clay more, thats the only way for them to get clay court expertise. Noticed how Roddick struggled to get to drops shots? He should have been sliding into the ball. On clay, the player who does not slide well, makes life difficult for himself
