Fernando Verdasco def. Milos Raonic 6-4, ret.
Milos Raonic’s struggle with back problems continued on Saturday. The Canadian was forced to retire after losing the first set 6-4 to Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.
For his part, Verdasco played well in the first set. The Spaniard has been struggling mightily with his form for the past month, but seems to be back on track.
The win sends Verdasco into the finals against Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro.
Juan Martin Del Potro def. Pablo Cuevas 6-2, 7-6(6)
World No. 46 Juan Martin Del Potro survived a set point on Cuevas’s serve in the second set tiebreak to close out this semifinal match in straight sets.
Del Potro played a somewhat sloppy match, despite the fact that he faced no break points. His ground strokes went amiss, but he got away with it because Cuevas could not gain any ground on the Del Potro serve.
The Argentine snagged a pair of service breaks in the first set, but Cuevas was a rock on break points against in the second. The Uruguayan went 8 for 8 to force a tiebreaker. Cuevas had a chance at 6-5 on his own serve to take the set, but shanked the ball and the opportunity was gone. Del Potro won the next 3 points to take the match.
