Milos Raonic and Fernando Verdasco sailed into the quarterfinals with wins on Thursday at the Estoril Open.
Milos Raonic def. Joao Sousa 6-3, 6-3
Canadian Milos Raonic is quickly racking up wins on European red clay. The newcomer played his first ever clay court tournament in Monte Carlo earlier this month and competed again in Barcelona. He made the round of 16 in each.
Raonic’s win over Sousa was a fairly routine straight set win. The Canadian was broken once in each set, but Portugal’s Sousa could not manage to hold onto his own serve long enough to take advantage of the service breaks. The Portuguese man dropped serve twice in the first and again in the second.
Raonic will take on Gilles Simon in the quarterfinals.
Fernando Verdasco def. Frederico Gil 6-1, 7-6(5)
Spaniard Fernando Verdasco overcame Frederico Gil and a raucous Portuguese crowd to win in straight sets. The first set was completely dominated by Verdasco, and the second appeared to be headed the same way. The Spaniard went up 2 breaks and stepped up to serve for the match at 5-2, when he threw in a bad service game and got broken.
Up another break and with another chance to serve out the match, Verdasco went down 0-30 and double faulted twice to be broken at love.
The second set was decided with a tiebreaker. Verdasco once again took the lead, only to have Gil pull nearly even. The Spaniard only squeaked out the tiebreaker and the match win.
