Feliciano Lopez takes out fellow Spaniard Albert Montanes on Friday in Belgrade. Lopez is joined in the semifinals by Janko Tipsarevic, a three-set winner over Somdev Devvarman.
Feliciano Lopez vs. (4) Albert Montanes 6-4, 6-4
Not even his least favorite surface and his opponent's most favorite surface could stop Lopez on Friday. The world No. 37 beat Montanes in one hour and 34 minutes to reach the semifinals of the Serbia Open. Lopez, who advanced to the quarters in Barcelona last week, is through to his first ATP clay-court semi since Stuttgart in 2007. He is set for an all-unseeded affair with Filippo Volandri, who ousted Marcel Granollers in straight sets.
Lopez fired 10 aces and never dropped serve, so one break was enough for him in each set. Montanes had chances of his own, but he missed two break-point opportunities in the first and three more in the second. The 28th-ranked Spaniard recorded four aces and two double-faults while winning just 46 percent of his second-serve points.
(7) Janko Tipsarevic d. Somdev Devvarman 6-3, 3-6, 6-4
Devvarman played his second grueling match in as many days, but this time he could not pull it out against the crowd favorite. To the delight of the Serbian fans, Tipsarevic held off his opponent and advanced after two hours and 38 minutes of play. For a while it looked like it would be easier for the world No. 36, as he served out the opening frame of play and then broke immediately for a 1-0 lead in the second.
At that point, though, Devvarman fought back. The 71st-ranked Indian, who beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in three hours and 13 minutes on Thursday, evened the score at 1-1 before adding one more break that allowed him to finish off set two on serve at 5-3. Devvarman also broke to stay alive in the third when Tipsarevic served for victory at 5-3. Tipsarevic, however, returned the favor right back and broke at love to clinch victory. Belgrade's No. 7 seed wrapped up his effort with five aces and four double-faults and awaits a likely semifinal showdown against countryman Novak Djokovic.
