  • Devvarman outlasts Garcia-Lopez, Troicki ousted

Devvarman outlasts Garcia-Lopez, Troicki ousted Seeds take a tumble on Thursday in Belgrade as both Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Viktor Troicki go down. They are taken out by Somdev Devvarman and Marcel Granollers, respectively.

    Somdev Devvarman d. (3) Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 7-6(6), 2-6, 7-6(8)

Devvarman avenged a recent loss in Houston by outlasting Garcia-Lopez in three hours and 13 minutes on Wednesday in Belgrade. India's No. 1 player lived dangerously in the first set, but he fought off eight of nine break points and forced a tiebreaker. Devvarman pulled out the 'breaker eight points to six, but he could not sustain the momentum in set two. Garcia-Lopez started to abuse his opponent's serve and he capitalized on all three of his break chances, sending the match to a third set.

Breaks continued to be the norm in the third, as four were exchanged en route to another tiebreaker. Devvarman, though, raised his level when it mattered most and he successfully served to stay in the tournament at both 4-5 and 5-6. At that point it was Garcia-Lopez's turn to play from behind. The 26th-ranked Spaniard saved match points at 5-6, 6-7 (on Devvarman's serve), and 7-8 before the world No. 71 finally converted his fourth opportunity on serve at 9-8. Devvarman struck four aces en route to a quarterfinal clash against Janko Tipsarevic.

    Marcel Granollers d. (2) Viktor Troicki 6-2, 6-3

Serbia still has Tipsarevic and Novak Djokovic still alive, but Troicki was sent packing after just one match on Thursday. Granollers ousted the No. 2 seed in one hour and 38 minutes to set up a meeting with Filippo Volandri. An apparent back injury did not help Troicki's cause and he took a medical timeout down 1-4 in the first set. Granollers soon served out the opening frame of play at 5-2 for an early lead.

Troicki continued to move poorly in the second and put almost nothing on his serve. In fact, the world No. 16 did not hold a single time in set two and held a total of just once in nine service games. Granollers donated his own serve on four occasions--including three times in the second--but it mattered little. The 52nd-ranked Spaniard did not have to finish things off on serve as his eighth break of the day came at 5-3 and clinched victory.
