Novak Djokovic wins his first clay-court match of the season on Wednesday in Belgrade an remains perfect in 2011. Djokovic advances to the quarterfinals along with Feliciano Lopez, a winner over Fernando Gonzalez.
(1) Novak Djokovic d. Adrian Ungar 6-2, 6-3
Djokovic returned to action for the first time since winning the Sony Ericsson Open and he cruised past Ungur in one hour and eight minutes during second-round action at the Serbia Open. The world No. 3, who is now 25-0 this season, showed minor rust from his brief absence but still had more than enough to dismiss the Romanian qualifier. Djokovic raced to a 3-0 lead in the first set only to give back the break as Ungur pulled to within 3-2. However, the crowd favorite quickly restored order and won three straight games to take a one-set advantage.
The second frame of play progressed similarly, with Djokovic easing his way to a 3-0 lead. Ungur, who still enjoyed one of his best weeks on tour despite the loss, again battled back and won two games in a row for 2-3. Just as he did in the opener, though, Djokovic went back up a break at 4-2 and he served out the proceedings the rest of the way. The top-seeded Serb, who won this inaugural event in 2009, capitalized on his second match point at 5-3 with a perfect serve-and-volley tactic. Djokovic will go up against Blaz Kavcic for a spot in the semifinals.
Feliciano Lopez d. (WC) Fernando Gonzalez 6-4, 7-6(4)
Gonzalez's first tournament of the season came to an end on Wednesday, as he fell to Lopez in round two after one hour and 31 minutes of play. Lopez has been an impressive form on clay having reached the Barcelona quarterfinals last week, and he came out blazing in this one. The Spaniard won all 18 of his first-serve points in the opening set and did not face a single break point en route to serving it out at 5-4.
Lopez also went up an early break in the second, but Gonzalez finally cracked his opponent's serve and leveled things at 2-2. From there both veterans held their way to a tiebreaker. The 516th-ranked Chilean fell behind early and fought off one match point on Lopez's serve at 6-3, but he could not get all the way back. Lopez wrapped up the proceedings with an inside-out forehand winner at 6-4. Next up for the world No. 37 is Albert Montanes, a three-set winner over Michael Berrer.
