Robin Soderling scrapes by in strange second round match in Estoril, while Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was booted by Uruguayan clay-courter, Pablo Cuevas.
Robin Soderling def. Jeremy Chardy 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-1
In the strangest of the second round matches on display in Estoril on Wednesday, Robin Soderling took out Frenchman Jeremy Chardy. In the first and third sets, Soderling played as his world No. 5 ranking suggests, but the middle set was disastrous from both men.
First, Chardy was up 5-2 in the set, only to allow Soderling back in. Next, the Swede served to close out the match in straight sets, but Chardy was able to break again. The tiebreaker was equally messy, with Chardy just nudging his nose in front to level things at a set a piece. Fortunately for Soderling, he was able to regain control in the third set.
Soderling will take on Juan Martin Del Potro in a highly anticipated quarterfinal.
Pablo Cuevas def. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-2, 7-6(0)
France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga can’t get any love on clay courts this year. The Frenchman has one win in 2 tournament tries so far in 2011, and this most recent loss to Pablo Cuevas, ranked 61 in the world, was a particularly bad showing. Tsonga wasn’t a factor at all in the opening set; Cuevas never so much as faced a break point. The Frenchman started to show signs of life in the second, even getting to 5-2 before Cuevas found his way back in the set.
The Uruguayan scraped his way back level with Tsonga before shutting him out in the tiebreak and taking the match in straight sets.
