Juan Martin Del Potro dropped a set, but the Argentine managed to find his way past qualifier Pedro Sousa in three.
Juan Martin Del Potro def. Pedro Sousa
This first 2011 clay court showing from Juan Martin Del Potro wasn’t a particularly promising one. Sousa played well for a man ranked No. 488 in the world, but Del Potro’s form was questionable at best. The Argentine’s movement was awkward, his return game was ineffective, but mostly he showed his lack of clay court play.
Though he dropped the middle set, the Argentine still advanced. He’ll take on Alejandro Falla in the second round.
Milos Raonic def. Igor Andreev
Russia’s Igor Andreev was once a real threat on clay courts, but he his ranking has dropped to 97 in the world, and he hasn’t won more than a handful of matches in 2011. Milos Raonic is a young, promising new player from Canada who is playing in just his third ever clay tournament.
The Canadian’s straight set win was not as easy as the scoreline suggests. Andreev had 7 chances to break serve in the second set alone, but Raonic’s clutch serving saw him out of trouble. The win sends the youngster into the second round where he will take on Portuguese wildcard Joao Sousa.
