Janko Tipsarevic treats the hometown crowd in Belgrade to a hard-fought win on Monday. He comes back from a set down to defeat Kei Nishikori and advance to a meeting with Mischa Zverev.
Janko Tipsarevic got the local charge at the Serbia Open off to a strong start on Monday, but not before an intense struggle. Tipsarevic battled past Kei Nishikori 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(0) after two hours and 17 minutes of play.
The Serb did not move well at the beginning of the match, and his opponent quickly capitalized. Nishikori dropped a mere three points in his first four service games, so two breaks of his own were more than enough for him to take a one-set advantage. The world No. 47's second break of the day finished off the opener in style.
Tipsarevic fought back in the second and completely turned the tide. Despite serving at a dismal 43 percent, he did not face a single break point during the set. Two breaks of the Nishikori serve allowed Tipsarevic to close out the set at 5-2 and force a decisive third.
Nishikori had the benefit of serving first in the final set, but Japan's No. 1 player could not quite convert the opportunity. He was two points from the match while returning at 5-4, deuce, but Tipsarevic held and stayed alive. After Nishikori took care of his serve for 6-5, he did not win a single point the entire rest of the way. Tipsarevic ended the match on an incredible 11-point winning streak; four at 5-6 and then seven in a row during a flawless tiebreaker.
The world No. 36 wrapped up his effort with six aces and three double-faults en route to a meeting with Mischa Zverev. Nishikori was doomed by six double-faults and he won only 42 percent of his second-serve points.
