Chilean veteran Fernando Gonzalez is making what he calls a "symbolic" return to tennis eight months after his last match, with the October hip surgery patient convinced that his career is nearing its end.
The 30-year-old is entered in Belgrade on clay but can hardly expect to start re-living his best days after last competing at the US Open in August.
The one-time No. 5 is looking long-term, hoping to play in the London Olympics next summer at age 32. "That is my main objective. But if I spend nine months of the protected ATP ranking with severe pain and I cannot win matches, I would have no problem saying 'no more, we got this far,'" he Chilean media. "Everything depends on how I be feeling."
Gonzalez is among a number of players who have undergone hip surgery. None of them have returned to their former best after the operations. Gonzalez had insider information form Argentine David Nalbandian, who also underwent the procedure.
Australian Lleyton Hewitt has had it on both hips, while former players Magnus Norman and one-time No. 1 Gustavo Kuerten were also forced under the knife for hip problems. "Nalbandian said that he had no hip problems after his operation," said Gonzalez, who begins play in Belgrade against a qualifier.
