  • Chardy, Hanescu advance in Estoril

    4/26/11 3:35 AM | Cheryl Murray
Chardy, Hanescu advance in Estoril Frenchman Jeremy Chardy and Victory Hanescu of Romania moved into the second round of the Estoril Open.

    Jeremy Chardy def. Adrian Mannarino

Jeremy Chardy was able to halt a two tournament losing streak with a first round victory over countryman Adrian Mannarino. Chardy has had a difficult 2011 so far, failing to advance past the second round of a single tournament on the season.

His win over Mannarino was loaded with break point chances. Mannarino faced a whopping 17 in the 2-set match and Chardy faced 7 of his own. With Mannarino struggling so much on serve, Chardy was primed to win the match. He was able to convert on 5 of his slew of break point chances, while surrendering just 2 on his own serve.

Chardy will take on top seed Robin Soderling in the second round.

    Victor Hanescu def. Rui Machado

Romania’s Victor Hanescu had little difficulty getting past Portugal's Rui Machado. The Romanian faced just one break point in the match, which he was able to save.

Machado gave up 3 break points in the match, one in the first set and a pair in the second. The win sends Hanescu into the second round where he will face the No. 7 seed Kevin Anderson.
